It's hard to believe that a Louisiana politician doesn't know who David Duke is
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is a Louisiana politician who tried convincing the public that he didn’t know that the separatist group EURO is associated with David Duke.
David Duke is the former grand wizard of the KKK who in 1991 ran an unsuccessful campaign for governor of Louisiana against former Gov. Edwin Edwards.
Louisiana voters disliked Duke so to the point that they decided that this was the time to “vote for the crook,” referring to Edwards who later served time in prison for corruption.
Scalise, has been under fire ever since a local blogger blogged about Scalise’s 2002 speech at Duke’s organization EURO.
According to the Huffington Post, a person described Scalise’s speech as “effective” in teaching the “up-to-date methods of civil rights and heritage related activism.”
At first, Scalise denied any connection to the group. He told Julia O’Donoghue of the Times-Picayune, “I didn’t know who all of these groups were and I detest any kind of hate group. For anyone to suggest that I was involved with a group like that is insulting and ludicrous.”
Yet, Scalise did know what type of group EURO was. During a 1999 interview with Roll Call, Scalise said that he was “like” the group’s founder, Duke, “but without the baggage.”
Hence, Scalise is saying that he knows Duke well enough to know the mounting of problems he brings.
Scalise tried to two-step his way out of the fact that he knows what Duke and his organization stands for.
But after recognizing that there was no way out, Scalise decided that it would be best to apologize for the error in his ways and then to blame his error on his staff.
